Student Loan Services & Collections

The Loan Services Office administers long-term educational loans. These include campus-based Perkins and Health Professional Loans, University loans, as well as non-campus-based FFEL Loans, such as Stafford, SLS and PLUS Loans.

Loans are administered either as paper transactions or electronically via Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT). Loan proceeds disbursed by check are picked up in the Loan Services Office, while funds transferred electronically are deposited directly into the student’s Billing and Receivables (BAR) account.

Federal regulations require that undergraduate students be enrolled in at least six units and graduate students in at least four units continuously throughout their stated loan period to receive loan funds. This will be verified before each loan disbursement is distributed. Student borrowers should also be aware of the following in regards to a disbursement made in the form of a(n):

Paper Transaction
If you are picking up your paper loan check, you must present a valid driver's license, DMV ID card, or passport, and have no outstanding financial holds on your records.

Electronic Transaction
If you chose a lender that participates in EFT, your loan funds are sent to UCLA electronically. Loan funds from such a lending institution will be disbursed directly to your BAR account. (For further information on the BAR process, please contact Student Accounting at 1121 Murphy Hall or call (310) 825–9194.)

If you withdraw or carry insufficient units during your stated loan period, any remaining loan funds will be returned to the lender and your loan will be canceled. In addition, you may be billed for funds you have already received. If this happens, you must apply for a new FFEL Loan that reflects your new loan period. In such a case or for more information, contact the Financial Aid Office, A129J Murphy Hall.
